  • Dentsply: A Great Stock, But Not A Great Price [View article]
It's been a long time since I've looked at YDNT, but my lasting memory is that they had a very doc-unfriendly marketing/sales philosophy and made a lot of enemies among their customer base.

BUT, that was some time ago and that perspective may not be relevant today.

Yep, I wouldn't be shocked if they thought about a bid for their Chinese ortho jv partner.

Good summary. As for Prodigy ... it's been a mess. They're intending to relaunch later this year.

  • MAKO Surgical Hooked, But Not Gutted [View article]
You are mistaken on several key points.

The two largest surgical robotics platforms (ISRG's da Vinci and MAKO's RIO) were approved via the 510(k) pathway and no clinical trials were required. That means less than a year for Stryker assuming no surprises or concerns with the FDA. Frankly, they could have already submitted their 510(k) application and none of us would know.

While ISRG has had to run clinical trials for subsequent tools, they've still been approved via the 510(k) process . It's unlikely that Stryker will be seeking broad multi-function labeling from the get-go, so the initial approval process will be straightforward.

Moreover, your closing statement has been proven wrong over and over again.

Ortho implants aren't nearly as common in those economies (relative to the U.S./EU) today, but I'm sure they'll grow in time...
The bigger issue would be price.

Also, keep in mind that MAKO's system is best for certain particular procedures/pt types and that's going to limit its usefulness in the scenario you laid out.

  • Patriot Coal: Different Coal Company, Same Coal Situation [View article]
    Mark,

If you're going to correct me, correct what I actually said.
I said "About 60-70% of the company's met coal goes to Europe,".

That is the percentage for Patriot. I never said 60-70% of industry-wide met coal goes to Europe, which is what you seem to be assuming.

Not sure where you're coming from saying that, as the third line in the article mentions the poor returns over the past 14 yrs and I end by mentioning the relatively poor ROIC.

Okay, smart guy. Write your own articles and let's all see how you do. Easy to heckle from the cheap seats - let's see what you do on the stage.

Not at these prices. SYK would have to pay $1.2B+ to get a deal done.

I'm highly confident that they can develop and launch a competitive system for less than $1.2B.

Has very little to do with ObamaCare. Has a lot to do with three factors.

    1) Hospitals/docs "over-implanted" for years and essentially over-fished the reservoir.

    2) The DOJ investigations/settlem... have significantly changed the marketing process and the patient selection process. It has also made hospitals more conservative about how they approach procedures.

    3) As the avg age of TKR/THR recipients has skewed lower, it has started to be more economically sensitive; in the current economy people aren't as comfortable with the copays and/or taking off work for the rehab.

I like other ideas more/better, but it's not a bad grab for growth. I feel like I remember some pretty scary days in the Intuitive story too (not saying they're the same, people... )
