Booksellers: Contemplating Life Without Music and Harry Potter
luckily, 'Twilight' (series) is doing a great business and bringing tweens, teens and even some of us older folks, into the bookstores to buy.
having said that, music sections will be smaller and smaller until finally they will be gone. hopefully the bookstores other aspects, books, toys, gifts and cafe, can take up the slack.

AAPL Smartphone Shows the Way to Competitors
not to worry about Apple showing other companies the way...by the time other companies have their 'near miss' experiences in trying to catch up, Apple will have some other innovative creation that again outpaces the pack. their budget for R & D goes up along with their profits. when i'm out and about and using my iPhone, people approach me and ask to see it and if it's really as great as the hype (yes!!!)...at first i thought this was a fluke..but it keeps happening. i think holiday sales will break all records for Apple...even in this economy.

JS-DC...i agree. people focus on Jobs and they forget that this is a huge company with so many brilliant people in it, innovating like crazy! it really won't matter what other companies come up with in trying to compete. Apple won't just sit there, not innovating. if we're reading about a 'possible' competition, you better believe Apple is already countering it or already ahead of it! i didn't think i'd like reading books or gaming on my iPhone...but now i'm addicted to both! that screen is amazing!
Netbooks will sell...but i love the size of the iPhone and the weight...it's wonderful...the little toy/phone/computer/boo... in my purse!
oh...and did i mention that 'Oven', the app, had a great turkey recipe:)

Google 'Violates' Apple's Rules - Unwarranted Hysteria Ensues
maybe Apple cares more about it's customers and wants them to enjoy the Google App..which i admit i downloaded immediately:) obviously the made the guidelines and they can break them but i also wonder if it was a nice way to sort of deflate the hype about the Google phone...if you can get all things Google on an iPhone.

      Palm: Looking Moribund
another example of a company with initial innovation, resting on it's laurals. you can do this if you manufacture bed linens, but not in the tech industry, ever, and certainly not when you have a competitor like Apple! Palm never really got it's Treo working right. i expect bad news on the rest of their product.

      The Dow's Lost Decade
thank you, 'closed'. too many investors (and the general public for sure) have no idea about history or how it really is in the rest of the world. we can't afford to be so ignorant. people want a 'sound bite' not actual information. the public thinks of their 'debt' as what they owe as the monthly payment..not what they owe entirely. with such a high level of comfort about debt, through ignorance of what it really means, we got to this terrible point.
trying to 'fix it' without really understanding it could lead to something far worse. panic and fear allowed us to be duped and make terrible mistakes after 9/11. this present scenerio presents another time of panic and fear. i hope we do better this time.

Apple Falls Flat as Market Rebounds - Is There Really Investor Confidence?
again, Buffeted makes very intelligent comments. i'm long APPL...it's a great company. i work at a zoo and mentor teens and they ALL want an iPhone or Touch or Mac for the holidays and they are getting them. This is almost true across the board, no matter what income level they're at because they'll take that ONE present and forgo everything else. 'fan boys' and girls..you bet! when i let them play a game on my iPhone, they're hooked for sure:) i'm no kid...i'm a senior, as are some of the other people there..and they also want an iPhone. i think Apple is going to blow the competition out of the water over the holidays.
i'm not a day trader...i'd like to convert some of your readers to long term investing...it's easier on the emotions.

Eight Areas to Consider About This Market
to 'closed'...not to mention the fact that the u.s. has fiat money...not backed by anything except 'agreement'. in a situation where the financial institutions were allowed to seduce an ignorant public into incurring far more debt than was reasonable, by any standards, it created desperate people, willing to agree to almost anything. scary.

I am long APPL and will remain so. this is a good article and we need to have more openess about all of this. the situation didn't come about suddenly. but to just had over $ and call it a 'bail out' is a terrible idea. the auto industry has to declare bankruptcy and reorganize into companies that actually produce what people want to buy. then, i agree, some help so they can retool is in order.

more problematic is citi! for the gov to back up over 300 billion in loans..where does it end? at some point, the worthlessness of our $ will become obvious to everyone.

yes, the market will come back some day...but it might not be in the country we think we live in right now.

Each Time I See Google's Android Pitch I Like It Less and Less
i work with a lot of teens and they ALL hope they get either the iPhone or Touch for the holidays. no matter where i go, people want to see my iPhone. nothing, so far, really matches the iPhone and i'm sure Apple is working hard to make sure it stays that way...it's not like they're not going to innovate anymore.
and it's an interesting observation about the AT & T stores...i hadn't thought about it..but any place with an Apple store will get walkins with questions about the iphone people have already purchased...leading to more purchases, and AT & T won't have to deal with it.

Stocks Will Continue to Erode In This Busted Economy
thanks for weighing in, Mr. Zaky. overall this is a good article, if grim. added to the list, we'll see major insurance companies, already shored up by the fed through medicare, saying it will need help to cover the rising cost of taking care of old people, since they're previous models didn't have us all living so long.
consumers will give up a lot of things...places to eat will feel it pretty hard...but we're hooked on technology, especially our cellphones and smartphones, partly because they help us feel that we're not so alone and, especially in tough time, that's a comfort. i think Apple will do well over the holidays. i mentor zoo volunteer teens and they ALL want iPhones or the Touch for the holidays. not one is pining for Android or, dare i mention it, Zune. it's the App store and cheap entertainment, once you buy the iPhone and contract.
then once they get the gift, they'll be in the Apple store in January. the King of Prussia store is still doing a booming business, even in a constantly slow mall. February is a long way away, except we'll have a change in the white house by then. Hopefully, it'll help.

Can You See Apple Under $60?
if the auto industry had a business model based on Apple's, we wouldn't be arguing about bailing them out and U.S. cars would still be the 'most wanted', instead of having their CEO's be the 'most wanted' for another reason.

Is iPhone Leading the Way in Smartphone Evolution?
it's obvious that smartphone makers are still playing catch up with the iPhone...do you really think Apple doesn't already have something more wonderful on board? NOTHING will blow Apple out of the water as long as they remain as innovative and $ loaded as they are. the iPhone has an OS, which no other smartphone has. I think we'll see a true pocket computer in the very near future...and it will come from Apple, which is a stock steal right now.

Music Moves to New Phase as CDs Fade
it woudln't be a surprise to find an iPhone app with all the missing liner notes for you to read while listening. if it's not there yet, i'll bet someone will do it soon, or perhaps the artists will do posts to your iPhone or Mac. This has all changed so fast, but the artists themselves will get better and better at it. Music will never die, not while humans and whales live.
